I'm sure we have all been guilty of texting and driving time to time and staring at a cell phone screen while our children make their first steps or say their first words. But, we have to remember that one day these little people of ours are going to be old and we are going to find ourselves saying "where did the time go?" Let's appreciate the "now" and toss our social media, texting, tweeting madness aside for just a moment to kick the ball to our kid or have a one on one face to face conversation with our toddler. I'm fully admitting that I've been in the same position as this dad before-I've put Emily down to email a co-worker or text a friend. But it wasn't until I saw the father/son in the park, that I realized how devastating this must be to a child. Sure, Emily is too young to know what I'm doing with my noisy, lighted device; but she is already accustomed to grabbing my phone from me as if it's a toy. While I appreciate social media and technology like the best of them, I just hope that we aren't raising a society that relies solely on phones for communication. Don't you remember how fun it was to play "kick the can" and "hide-and-go-seek" back in the day? Okay, MAYBE I'm dating myself, but I'm just sayyyying-in some instances technology isn't all it's cracked up to be!
