My occupation is Fitness/Wellness. I am the Programs Manager for the Missouri Athletic Club. I manage all Youth Programs as well as teach fitness classes and personal train. My second job and passion is photography in which I started a business "Joy Holdmeier Photography". I specialize in families and children, but also do weddings, births, engagements, etc.
How did you get into the field?
I decided to work at a gym in college to make extra money. I was studying Athletic Training, but as I started to work with people in the gym and started training I realized I would like to help people reach their fitness and wellness goals. It was very rewarding.
I got into photography after having my first born. I've always loved photos and memories. I NEEDED to learn how to take amazing photos of my children, so I picked up a camera and started watching videos! I am self taught and I never stop learning.
Does your education background reflect what you do for work?
My degree is in Physical Education with an emphasis on Sports Management because my University didn't offer Exercise Science. I thought I could always go back to be a teacher if I chose and could always use management. I have been in management for over ten years in various positions. I love working with a team. Also, I was always very good at art and have always had a creative mind. My photography lets me use that!
Give me three reasons why you like it?
I love Fitness because
1. It is tremendously rewarding!! I love getting emails not only about the scale and fitting into cloths, but I love when clients tell me that they are addicted to exercise and how good they feel, or when they cross the finish line of a marathon!
2. It keeps me in shape! I teach about 5 classes per week and I get paid to exercise!
3. I meet all kinds of people and make so many friends. Fitness is very social and I love that.
I love photography because
1. I love the way photos make me feel. I'm all about capturing memories that will last a lifetime. I love giving that to someone.
2. Photography keeps my creative mind working. I love seeing what I can come up with!
3. I meet really wonderful families and I love bringing out their personalities in their photos.
What would you consider the stress level of your current occupation (1-10, 10 being the highest)?
My stress level in both my jobs should really be around a 3, but because I work both jobs and have a family at home, I create my own stress with booking myself solid. So, I feel more like a 9 most of the time :) It's not my jobs, its just me!
If money was not an issue, would you still choose the same career path?
I would absolutely choose the same path if money were no issue!!! I'd probably just train and teach without having the responsibility and stress of management. I would also work more in photography because I love it that much. I keep working in management for the steady income, but I'd definitely stay in my fields.
What is the hardest part about your job?
The hardest part about my job in fitness and management is making people realize that they control their outcomes and I can't do it for them. They need to do the work outside of the gym.
In photography I am always aiming to please and work really hard to offer the best product. I want my families to enjoy their photos for years to come.
Did you always know this is the career path you wanted to take or were you diverted a few times?
I always knew I didn't want to sit at a desk my whole life! I am a total right-brained thinker. If I had the time, there are a million other fun things I'd like to do. I always wanted a job where people would say..."Wow, that's a cool job. You get paid to do that?" and I often think to myself, "Really?? This is my job? I'm so lucky!"
